"Making the Grade" - Back to School Supplies for Children At-Risk

The numbers speak for themselves. Among Israel 's 1.5 million school age children, 600,000 live under the poverty line. Twenty percent of these children are new immigrants. Even more alarming is the growing phenomenon of school drop outs throughout Israel, especially among disadvantaged populations and in the periphery which have high concentrations of new immigrants. Last year alone,4,400 new immigrant children dropped out of school. None of these 600,000 children can afford the cost of purchasing school bags and supplies necessary for starting the school year on track.

The Jewish Agency Response

In an unprecedented effort, the Jewish Agency together with Office Depot will provide 20,000 children-at-risk, many of them new immigrants, in 1st through 6th grades with the necessary school supplies to "make the grade "during the 2004-5 school year.
