Ms. Carole Solomon - The New Chair of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors.
The Jewish Agency Board of Governors, today, unanimously elected Ms. Carole Solomon to the position of Chair, for a four-year term of office. Ms. Solomon, who is currently Vice-Chair of the UJC, will succeed Mr. Alex Grass, who has chaired the Board of Governors since June, 1999 and who will be completing his term of office this coming June.
Ms Solomon had been recommended by a nine-member committee, which included: Mr. Alex Grass, and former Chairmen of the Board of Governors Max Fisher, Mendel Kaplan, Charles Goodman; Mr. Harvey Wolfe, Chair of the Keren Hayesod Board of Trustees; Mr. Irwin H. Levy, of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach, Board Member and Chair of the Budget and Finance Subcommittee on Finance and Administration; Ms. Jane F. Sherman, Chair of the UIA, and Mr. Morris Offit, Chair of the UJA-Federation of New York.
Three candidates had vied for the post of Chair of the Board of Governors: Mr. Robert Goldberg, Chairman of the Executive of the United Jewish Communities of North America (UJC); Mr. Richard L. Pearlstone, Member of the Board and Executive, and Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, and Ms. Carole Solomon.
Mr. Robert Goldberg congratulated Ms. Solomon on her election in his own name as well as that of the UJC, and promised the full cooperation of the UJC.
The Jewish Agency Board of Governors, comprised of 121 members, is the highest administrative body of the Jewish Agency. It oversees operations of the Jewish Agency and is authorized to establish permanent and ad hoc committees. The Board of Governors meets three times a year, in February, June, and October. It formulates the Jewish Agency’s budget and makes policy and operational decisions for the Jewish Agency.
Ms. Carole Solomon is a Vice-Chair of UJC and Chair of the Campaign/FRD Pillar. She is a former president of the UJA National Women’s Campaign; she was a member of the UJA Board of Trustees and Chair of its Budget and Finance Committee.
She is director of UJA-Federation of New York, as well as a former chair of the federation’s Partnership 2000 program. She serves as Vice-Chair of the UHA-Federation’s Major Gifts Initiative. She is also a member of the Board of the JDC.
Formerly, Ms. Solomon was Chair of the women’s Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Co-Chair for major gifts of that federation’s Operation Exodus campaign.
Ms. Solomon is a graduate of the Univrsity of Pennsylvania. A member of the Jewish Agency’s Board of Governors since October 1994, she serves as Co-Chair of the Aliyah and Klitah Committee and is a member of the Jewish Agency Executive.
