Sallai Meridor Presents New Edition of Hertzl's Diaries to the President of the State of Israel

World Zionist Organization Chairman Sallai Meridor and high-ranking members of the Zionist Executive presented president Moshe Katsav with a new edition of Herzl's diaries. The ceremony took place today (3 July) as part of the National Commemorations of the anniversary of Herzl's death, which fell on the 20th of Tamuz (three days ago).

Herzl's Zionist Diaries, which the founder of the Jewish State called the "The Jewish Cause" include 18 chapters in threevolumes. They were first printed in Berlin, Germany from 1922 to 1923. At that time, some uncomplimentary references to people still alive were not included. Likewise, extracts which the editors thought would tarnish Herzl's reputation, were not included. From 1983 to 1985, the first  critical, unexpurgated edition of Herzl's German text was published in Germany.

Herzl's Diaries begin with a confession and continue with notes concerning his programs. Inserted are letters to heads of state (the Turkish Sultan, the German Emperor, etc.), to various interlocutors, Jewish leaders and philanthropists (Baron de Rothschild, Baron de Hirsch, etc.), friends and partners in his activities.

The edition, which was presented today to the President, is a translation Herzl's complete original manuscripts, which are preserved in the Zionist Archives. Mr. Josef Wenkert translated the text of the Diaries. Dr. Michael Heymann, former Director of the Central Zionist Archives, provided the scientific aparatus, and Prof. Shlomoh Avineri wrote a compendious introduction.

The present edition of Herzl's Diaries, which has been published by  the Central Zionist Archives, the Bialik Foundation and the  Publishing House of the World Zionist Organization: TheZionist  Library, contain many excerpts from Herzl's writings, which are still  relevant to our day.
