Letter by World Zionist Organization Chairman Sallai Meridor
to Heads of Jewish Organizations worldwide
concerning inclusion of
Joerg Haider's Freedom Party to New Austrian Government
We have all watched with growing concern and trepidation the situation
in Austria. The threat may expand to the rest of the European
community and at the same time the danger is far beyond the boundaries
of the Jewish people, it is to Europe and the entire free world.
The reaction of many Western countries has been quite encouraging and
the Jewish people play both a moral and universal role as we are
living witnesses to what can happen in the world when racism and
hate rear their ugly head. We must leave no stone unturned as we work
with the nations of the world to wake up and expunge this phenomenon.
The danger is real and we must act together. Any crack in our united
front will be used by Haider and his partners.
The World Zionist Executive, meeting in an emergency session on Monday,
February 7, issued a public statement calling for combined efforts
against the latest developments in Austria. The WZO Executive also
called for Jews worldwide to refrain from vacationing in Austria and
for the cancellation of European Jewish events in Austria. We have
also decided to establish an Internet site under the name
http://www.AUSTRIAWATCH.com
to monitor and to provide updates of the situation. We have also
established a special monitoring and action group headed by Chaim
Chesler.
Haider's real nature is evident in his latest offer to buy us out
with offers of money. It must be made clear that we will not negotiate
with this government while at the same we encourage every other
country to disengage from it. Only standing together, working with
the rest of the free world, we will stand a chance to succeed in this
mission.
Sincerely,
Sallai Meridor
