Jewish Networking towards the Semantic Web Age

14 November 2002

A special session on Jewish Networking towards the Semantic Web Age has taken place at the conference of the Israel Association of Information Technology that took place in Tel Aviv, 13 November.

The Jewish Agency presented to the Israel IT Industry the latest developments in Web technologies that enable the creation of a shared Jewish market for information, services and goods. It will lead to economies of scale in providing education, training, community development and collaborative decision-making using Semantic Web technologies.

The Semantic Web is an extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. Automated tools can use common set of terms called ontologies to power services such as more accurate Web search, intelligent software agents, and knowledge management.

The development of controlled vocabularies and ontologies is carried out in carefully defined fields of content; hence there is a pressing need for Jewish content to be organized in the forms required by the Semantic Web.
