The initiative to establish a fund based in Israel for the advancement of Jewish education in the Diaspora developed in Jerusalem in 1971, through the joint efforts of Louis A. Pincus æ"ì (then Chairman of the World Zionist Organization/Jewish Agency For Israel), Max M. Fisher (then Chairman of the JAFI Board of Governors), and Moshe Krone æ"ì (then head of the Jewish Agency Department of Torah Education). After Pincus' sudden death in 1973, efforts to endow the fund continued. When it was formally established in 1977, the Fund was dedicated in Pincus' memory. Max Fisher agreed to serve as Chairman. Representatives of the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and the Government of Israel, constitute the Fund's Board. From the outset, the Fund has served as the round table around which these entities discuss issues of Jewish education in the Diaspora. In its work, the Fund connects the outstanding educational resources within the State of Israel's Department of Education, to Jewish communities in the Diaspora. The Fund awarded its first grants in March, 1977. | ||
