Additional areas of special interest

In addition to the primary areas in which the Fund operates, it has established procedures to accelerate approval of projects in several areas. Applications for the following projects are accepted year-round, and can be acted upon quickly. They are exempt from the May 31 and September 30 deadlines, which apply to most applications to the Fund. Establishment of Jewish Kindergartens in the Diaspora The Fund provides incentive grants to encourage the opening of new Jewish preschools in the Diaspora. These preschools teach Jewish traditions, and celebrate Shabbat and festivals. The curriculum includes simple, age-appropriate Hebrew, and aims to prepare children to enter Jewish day schools, where available. Establishment of Jewish Kindergartens in the FSU The Fund provides incentive grants to encourage the opening of new Jewish preschools in the Former Soviet Union. These preschools teach Jewish traditions, and celebrate Shabbat and festivals. The curriculum includes simple, age-appropriate Hebrew, and aims to prepare children to enter Jewish day schools, where available. Jewish Special Education The Fund encourages schools to train Jewish Studies staff to work with children who have special needs, and to develop curricula and educational materials for use with these children. Small Communities The Fund encourages educational projects in small communities, in partnership with roof organizations such as AJJDC, JAFI, and Alliance Israelite Universelle. Each project should include a group of several small communities. Use of Multi-media in Jewish Education The Fund encourages projects which utilize telecommunication and computer technology in Jewish education. This includes use of film, CD-Rom's, DVD's, the Internet, and Distance Learning. The Fund recognizes that technology can facilitate and enhance - but never replace - personal contact between teacher and student. The emphasis remains educational content. Applications for small grants are accepted throughout the year, and can be acted upon immediately. However, applications for larger projects utilizing multimedia are subject to the Fund's regular schedule. Evaluation Research This project provides funds for evaluation of Pincus Fund projects. The Fund's teacher training projects have been evaluated as part of this program.
