CHAPTER EIGHT:Closing The Circle In Jewish Life Cycle: Rituals, Culture And Us

Background

2. APPROACH

While it might be expected that the first point would be about G-d and the overall theological framework, so essential to an understanding of the meaning of Judaism, the moment that the cultural system is examined from the standpoint of Theology, integrating all the other themes into the theological framework, there is a risk of alienating and turning off those Jews who cannot buy into the theological point of view. The review process will, therefore, begin from the opposite direction.

There is no question that the Theology is deep and very central, and that Judaism cannot be understood or even approached without it. Nevertheless, even setting aside the Theology, there exists a deep and coherent system, one that can be meaningful for all people, whatever their Theology. It is therefore possible to examine all these facets and finally surround them with the outer framework of theological belief. G-d will be the finishing point, rather than our point of departure: in this equation, we begin with human beings.
