Brit Milah

Visit the Jewish Life Information Center

In modern day Israel, almost all Jews perform a traditional brit milah on their sons and view this act as an important manifestation of their connection to the Jewish People.

Circumcision has become an accepted social norm for Jews living in Israel today. Even the majority of Jews that feel little to no connection to tradition circumcise their children.

According to a survey published in the Iton Yerushalayim newspaper in July 2000, 97% of Israeli-born Jewish males are circumcised. Another survey, taken for the Avichai Foundation by the Gutman Center (February 2002), found that 87% of Israelis find it ‘important’ (17%) or ‘very important’ (70%) to circumcise their children. Following sitting shiva for family members, brit milah was rated as the religious act most important to the Israeli public.
