Introduction

Access to the Internet is rapidly becoming the central aspect of the new information age. The home computer can now enable the user to receive information from international sources, at the price of a local telephone call. The Internet is cheap, easy to use, and provides for interaction between the individual and information. Moreover, it enables, through the USENET, individuals to correspond in discussion groups. The Internet has become a central element in the education of a new generation and it is growing: "In the United States and Canada, approximately thirty seven million people, or 17 percent of the population sixteen years or older, have access to the Net".(1)

The Internet, provides information in sound simplicity and color: three integral elements in the formation of propaganda. As such, many groups have discovered a new means to advocate their cause. The Internet has become a rich source of information, but also an uncensored outlet for antisemitism and anti-zionism. As the racist Home Page of the British National Party reflected:

"Many people in Britain still have little idea of what kind of country they are now living in, and the 'controlled media' will ensure that the public are misinformed for as long as possible. Cyberspace offers a new opportunity to break the monopoly of the mass media, which has ruthlessly manipulated the British people for decades into accepting the destruction of their country and of their way of life." (2)

The Internet has become the quintessential medium for propaganda, providing a potential audience for racist groups that would have been unimaginable a few years ago. The Net Nazi has come of age.

White Supremacists On The Internet

Racist groups utilize the Net for three definable purposes, namely; propaganda, recruitment and marketing. In order to understand the nature of antisemitism on the Internet we need to examine more closely these uses of the information superhighway. As the Wiesenthal Center notes:

The emergence of the information superhighway has transformed the rules of engagement in the market place of ideas. Virtually overnight the new world of Cyberspace, combining the communicative clout of newspapers, telephones, faxes...is providing direct access...(to) homes and institutions worldwide. Small wonder that more that 50 hate groups, long frustrated by their inability to package and deliver their message in a consistent and attractive format, have rushed to embrace the new technologies."(3)

Nazism Propaganda on the Net

On the Internet, Neo Nazi groups explain, without censorship, the ideology of Natural Socialism. The Website of 'Storm Front', for example, provides the user with a twenty page explanation of Nazism in a question and answer style format. The site answers such questions as "What is National Socialist?", "Why do you call yourself Aryan?", "Why do you use the Swastika?", "Why do you give that Hitler Salute?" Its answers are racist and supremacist.

Whilst the method of propaganda is new, its messages have been repeated in history as a justification for genocide.

"The world manipulators are an international network of highly resourceful fanatics who believe in their rightful destiny to be Lords of the Earth. The network of organized crime has become a defecto, quasi secret super government exercising new absolute control over the world's banking system...(and) mass media. Jews, members of a people who have chosen themselves to rule the world, comprise a majority of the world manipulators." (4)

The freedom of the Internet enables Net Nazis to incite racial hatred without restraint. The racist British National Party, for example, reproduces on its Website an article by its National Press Officer, entitled, "Nationalism - a Growing Force Throughout Europe", originally in "Spike", Bath University's student magazine. The Student Union refused to print the racist article that called for resettlement of black people and "the wish to see other races building their own societies in their own countries, and for the white people to be free to do the same."(5) On the Internet there is no such restriction. In Cyberspace anybody is allowed to scream.

The propaganda of Net Nazis has developed a rhetoric and style of its own. The Cyberspace National Group (CNG) calls upon its soldiers "to kill those foreigners who pose a direct threat to their women, children and homes". The Jew, they continue, "must be removed from positions of cultural, legal and economic influence".(6)

"ZOG", an acronym for Zionist Occupation Government, is a popular euphemism for the alien-Americans, the Washington Criminals, and their willing collaborators within Federal State, and local government agencies that dictate directives to the American People and force our compliance.

The Zionism Occupation Government is an entity under the hegemony of the World Manipulators who stealthily coordinate the policies of the several occupation governments wielding power over the Aryan Nations to provide an uniform tyranny as well an a united front of the "international community" against any potential threat.

ZOG is a "occupation government" because it is commanded by infiltrators from a foreign power who gained entry to the United States for the purpose of sabotage of America's legitimate authority, armed forces, and economy leading to our unavoidable capitulation as a sovereign Nation.

ZOG is "Zionist" because it aims toward fulfillment of a Jewish dream based on ancient myth that Jerusalem would one day be a Capital of the World, issuing commands to all Nations of the Goyim (a usually derogatory Yiddish term for "the Gentiles")."(7)

Whilst accessibility is the clear benefit of using the Internet as a medium, for propaganda, there are also disadvantages. The computer user is alone when receive propaganda. Moreover, a Website by nature is general, unaware of its precise audience. The Website writer cannot stylize propaganda for a specific audience. Much of the power of the original Nazi message was that it appealed not to the individual, but to the individual in a mass. A Website does not provide a sense of belonging, or energy for the receiver of propaganda, as does a rally or a film in a cinema.

Herein, may lie the weakness of the Website as a propaganda medium, in particular for Nazi propaganda that requires the subordination of the individual for a triumph of the will of the mass.

Recruitment On The Internet

The Internet enables Neo Nazi groups with the means to recruit new members, whilst providing anonymity, USENET, enables the propagandist to overcome the problem of generality on the Website. Milton John Kleim, a Net Nazi, writes:

"USENET offers enormous opportunity for the Aryan Resistance to disseminate our message to the unaware and ignorant. It is the only relatively uncensored (so far) free-forum mass medium which we have available. The State cannot yet stop us from "advertising" our ideas and organizations on USENET... NOW is the time to grasp the WEAPON which is the Net, and wield it skillfully and wisely while you may still do so freely."

Crucial to our USENET campaign is that our message is disseminated beyond "our" group...

We MUST move out beyond our present domain, and take up position on "mainstream" groups...

Find groups that require "tailored" messages:...groups concerning politics and society would be suitable for our message about the Jewish controlled media.

Tailor your messages for each group. Our ideology has myriad facets, and the well-informed activist can extract something to fit into just about every group.

Marketing on the Internet

The Internet provides an opportunity for Neo nazi groups to market products that are illegal in many countries. The National Socialist White People's Party's Website page provides readers with the opportunity to buy such computer games as "U Boat II Operation Drumbeat", produced by 'Deadly Games Ltd', the game is a simulated U boat operation. Other sites offer games that enable the user to be a concentration camp guard. Most Websites provide for the purchase of books, nazi memorabilia, video cassettes and racist records. The Internet has become a market place for the Net Nazi.

Countering Nazi Propaganda On The Internet

Racism on the Internet is becoming a central problem in the new information age.

The scale of the problem is only beginning to be recognized by many of the anti racist bodies, such as the Anti Deformation League and Simon Wiesenthal Center. The issue of how best to counter the problem is still unresolved, with claims of "freedom on speech" and "the first amendment" providing the legal justification for the continuation of hate propaganda. To date, nobody has been prosecuted for racial incitement on the Internet.

The counter propaganda campaign has begun, for whilst Nazi propaganda is more easily accessible on the Internet, anti racist material is more easily available too. Yet, the most effective response to the Internet may lie in our own hands. Education begins at home and it is becoming the growing responsibility of parents to monitor and even restrict the trek of their children in Cyberspace. (9)
