US Policy Considerations

The Scandal of U.S.-Saudi Relations
by Daniel Pipes
National Interest

"For decades, U.S. government agencies have engaged in a consistent pattern of deference to Saudi wishes, making many unwonted and unnecessary concessions", says Daniel Pipes. This in-depth analysis shows how the not-so-subtle influence of the Saudi wealth often infringes on constitutional freedoms which American take for granted – such as safety, religion and personal status -- both at home and abroad.

UNdiplomatic behavior

After a long history of UN resolutions condemning Israel, at last comes a welcome change in US policy at the UN Security Council as delivered by the US Ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte, demanding the explicit condemnation of Palestinian terrorism as well as the groups which perpetrate it, an address of Israel's security needs and a call to return to negotiations and diplomacy. Syria's latest condemnation of Israel therefore failed to pass. The UN's recent partiality towards calls from Arab states is highlighted in quotations from Kofi Annan, Terje Larsen and rounded out with US Congressman Tom Lantos' protest to Annan at UNWRA's complicity in terrorism.

A Guarantee of More Violence

The inevitable Palestinian response to questions about terrorism, to the effect that this is because of the "occupation" is a mendacity; furthermore, they rejected the Camp David proposals - because they were asked to make peace in return for land. Ergo, they want land without peace, without putting down their weapons.
The US State Department is proposing to actually reward terrorism by offering a "provisional" Palestinian state at this time, although it is inevitable that there will be a state. Morally, strategically and diplomatically, this is a disastrous step by the US.
Statehood guarantees territorial inviolability - and thus sanctuary for terrorists, whom Israel will be powerless to pursue. It also means a build-up of arms, including rockets and ballistic missiles posing a threat to Israeli civilian air traffic. Finally, it would allow strategic alliances with terrorist sponsoring states.

Wanton slaughter of Christians continues at Arafat's orders, US support gives him credence, while contributions maintain regime of persecution & terror.

The ME parallel is not Lebanon. Without a PA crackdown on terror there will be no peace process. Under Arafat's anti-semitic, undemocratic regime, an Israeli pull-out is suicidal, because the PA is bent on Israel's destruction.

Palestinians are testing a new form of warfare - not acting 'out of desperation"' - a 'strategic choice' to destroy. Israel 'needs to deliver' a blow; US should stand strong on terror, sympathizers and talks.

Bin Laden would be there, even if Israel did not exist; no appeasement of mass murderers; without US support, Israel would have to defend itself to the last person; the free world must prevail. If not, terror will go on to its next target.
