Biblical Jewish Claims to the Land of Israel
by Rabbi Dr A. Abrahami

Biblical Briefs

1. Jerusalem and Zion are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible 809 times, but not mentioned even once in the Koran . (The figure for mentions of Jerusalem alone is 656 times.)

2. The land of Israel has been promised to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - the Jewish people alone - many, many times (e.g. Genesis 12, 26, 28, Psalm 136); not to any other nation in the world!

3. Psalm 132: "Zion is my dwelling place forevermore, there I shall give rise to the Messiah from the seed of David." (No one else!)

4. Our forefathers and kings paid for the land of Israel with solid gold and silver.
- Abraham bought the Machpela cave and its neighbouring area in Hebron (Genesis 23,10-20; 25, 9-11) for 400 pieces of pure best quality silver.
- Jacob bought part of Shchem - Nablus (Genesis 33) for 100 Ksita (high quality ornamental coins).
- King David paid 600 gold Shekels for part of Jerusalem (I Chronicles 21, 25).
- King Omri bought Mt Shomron for 2 talents of silver, to build his capital Shemer (I Kings 16; 24).
After the exile of the Jews from the holy land in 70 CE, other peoples moved into the vacuum.

Koranic and Islamic Sources on the Land of Israel

1. It is written in the Koran (Sura 5 - The Dinner Table, 21)
"Moses said unto his people [of Israel]; Allah (G-d) made you kings and gave you that which He
gave not to any other of His creatures. Oh My people, go unto the holy land Allah has ordained for you".
(Therefore, Muslims cannot claim Israel, because it is not their land)

2. It is further written in the Koran (Sura 17 -The Children of Israel, 104):
"We [the Muslims] said to the Children of Israel; dwell in the [holy] land and when the time of promise of the latter days comes, we [the Muslims] shall bring you together again out of the various people".
(Reality check: Muslims are commanded to help the Jews return to Israel!)

3. The Muslim claim to Jerusalem is supposedly based on the Prophet Mohammed's dream that he ascended to Heaven on his nocturnal journey from the famous mosque on the Temple Mount - Dome of the Rock (Al Aksa):
(Sura 17 - The Children of Israel,1) "Glory be to Him Who made His servant to go on a night from the Sacred Mosque to the remote mosque of which We have blessed the precincts, so that We may show to him some of Our signs; surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing."

However: Mohammed died 60 years before the mosque was constructed; at that time, there was a Byzantine church on the Temple Mount.
Furthermore: There is no trace of the story about Mohammed's ascent in the elaborate inscription on the mosque.

4. Says the famous 13th century Arab geographer Yakit: "Mecca [in Saudi Arabia] is the holy place for the Muslims and Jerusalem is the holy place for the Jews".
