Yom Hashoa Vehagevurah - Holocaust and Martyrs Memorial Day
This day - 27th Nissan - commemorates the tragedy of the Jews of Europe during the Second World
War. Hitler's master plan, "The Final Solution" was aimed at annihilating all Jews (as well as other
"undesirables"). The outcome of the Holocaust was that some 6,000,000 Jews - or a third of world
Jewry - had been wiped out. On this day, the Kaddish prayer is recited, ceremonies are held in
Jewish communities, and Jewish schools mark the day by holding special educational programs. In
Israel, the day is also marked by national ceremonies at Yad Vashem, Kibbutz Lohamei Hageta'ot,
and other institutions associated with Holocaust memorial.
