The Important Dates of the Jewish Year in Order of Occurrence [Click on appropriate day for more information]


Nisan (March-April):
14 Fast of the Firstborn - Ta'anit Bechorim
15 Commencement of the Passover - Pesach (8 days; 7 days in Israel)
16 Beginning of counting of the Omer
27 Holocaust and Martyrs Memorial Day - Yom Hasho'ah


Iyar (April-May):

4 Memorial Day for Israel's Fallen - Yom Hazikaron
5 Israel Independence Day - Yom Ha'atzma'ut
18 33rd Day of the Omer - Lag Ba'omer
28 Jerusalem Day - Yom Yerushalayim


Sivan (May-June):

6 & 7 Feast of Weeks - Shavu'ot


Tammuz (June-July):

17 Fast commemorating breach made in wall of Jerusalem -Tzom Shiva Asar BeTammuz. Beginning of Three Weeks of Mourning


Av (July-August):

9 Fast commemorating destruction of First and Second Temples (586 BCE & 70 CE) and fall of Betar (135 CE) - Tisha B'Av


Elul (August-September):

The shofar is blown daily during the weekdays of the month. Penitential prayers - selichot - are recited during the last week of the month.


Tishri (September-October):

1 & 2 New Year - Rosh Hashanah (2 days)
3 Fast of Gedaliah - Tzom Gedaliah
10 Day of Atonement - Yom Kippur
15 Commencement of the Festival of Tabernacles - Sukkot (9 days; 8 days in Israel), incorporating Eighth Day of Solemn Assembly - Shemini Atzeret, and Day of Rejoicing of the Torah - Simchat Torah.


Cheshvan (October-November): No special days


Kislev (November-December):

25 Commencement of Chanukah, Feast of Lights - Chanukah (8 days)


Tevet (December-January):

10 Fast commemorating the commencement of Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem - Asarah Betevet.
Also, day for reciting the Kaddish prayer for Holocaust victims whose date of death is unknown - Yom Hakkadish Hakelali


Shevat (January-February):

15 New Year for Trees - Tu B'shvat


Adar (February-March):

13 Fast of Esther - Ta'anit Esther
14 Purim - Purim
15 Shushan Purim - Shushan Purim
In a Leap Year, an extra month is added here, and this thirteenth month is called Adar Sheni (the Second Adar). When that happens, Purim is observed in Adar Sheni.
