The festival of Passover

The festival of Pesach (Passover) is a seven day holiday (8 days in the Diaspora) comemorating the exodus of our ancestors, the Israelite Hebrews, from hundreds of years of slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. The highlight of the holiday is the festive Seder meal, rich with symbols, good food and the dramatic retelling of the escape from Egypt through the recitation of the Hagaddah. During the week of Passover it is forbidden to eat bread (leavened foods) and certain grains and pulses in order to remember that our ancestors fled Egypt in great haste with the Eygptian forces in hot pursuit.
Passover is known also as “Chag HaAviv,” the festival of Spring as it occurs during the month of Nissan (corresponding to March/April)and “Chag HaHerut,” the festival of freedom.

The central ceremony of Passover, the seder, gives us interesting food for thought regarding the educational act. Our sages, with no assistance from Dewey, Piaget or the progressive education movement, designed a ceremony that reflects some of the best in contemporary educational practice. The participation of the family in the seder reminds us of the special educative power of the intergenerational interchange.

The Passover Seder
The Seder can perhaps best be described as a "talk-feast." Conducted around a table laden with the bounty of the earth, it is people spending a leisurely evening engaged in good talk and good food.

The Passover story did not occur in Israel so it is hard to recommend places to visit! HOWEVER, it can be helpful to young children, especially those in the Southern Hemisphere to see pictures of Israel at springtime. After all, Passover is also Chag Haaviv – the festival of Spring.

At this site ( www.israelimages.com) you will also be able to find pictures of Jerusalem which can be connected to the aliyah la regel - the traditional pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Passover as it is celebrated in Israel. In a classroom display it could look like this:

For Pesach we are doing something a little different! On Erev Rosh Chodesh Nissan (Wednesday, April 2nd) a video conference workshop on Pesach took place. The workshop was given in Jerusalem and one hundred teachers in Cape Town and Johannesburg participated. Click and see the slides of a Power Point presentation that presents some of the ideas presented in the workshop.
