Milo Centers are regional
cultural centers for children that provide unique programs in the arts
and science. Each child acts as a culture consumer. In the Center a child
experiences a wide range of art forms and styles in order to facilitate
his openness, discourage prejudices and to develop a respect and appreciation
for different cultures.
The acquisition of the "language of the arts" as a mean and
not as the ultimate goal provides the child with the tools with which
to approach and relate to an artistic piece and appreciate its aesthetics
more fully. The Milo center maintains that children as young as 4 years
old are significant culture consumers; they visit museums, concerts, and
theatre and nature outings – as an essential part of their education.
PURPOSES
OF THE MILO CENTER ACTIVITIES
1. Convey basic concepts of literature and the arts in order to enable
the child
to enter into a dialogue with the work of art
2. To familiarize the child with the norms and appropriate behavior expected
in cultural centers in order to feel comfortable, secure and welcome.
3. To encourage the child's ability to choose and become aware of his/her
individual preferences.
4. To develop the skills which will enable a child to scrutinize, listen
and
experience in order to become an active consumer of the arts who is active,
sensitive and enjoys the exposure to art.
5. To cultivate the desire to experience art.
Children who come
to the Milo Centers are instructed by academic preschool teachers with
a specialization in the arts.
Professional support
for the Milo Centers comes from the Ministry of Education, Preschool Division
- through professional consultations, ongoing supervision, seminars and
conferences, continuing education in subjects relevant to formalizing
all aspects of the arts, cultivating and encouraging new artistic ventures,
publicizing current research areas and promoting ongoing reciprocal relationships
between different bodies devoted to the arts.
THE
MILO CENTER IN IR GANIM, JERUSALEM
The center enables the encounter with Dudu Gerstein work of art.
Dudu Gerstein is
one of the famous Israeli artists. He paints and makes wood and metal
environmental sculptures. He made a large contribution to the art program
by loaning his works to the Milo Center.
As the children enter the center they actually enter an art gallery which
presents the artist and his work. After a short session about the artist
bibliography and a preliminary tour at the gallery ,the children experience
an art workshop in which they create their own work of art, inspired by
what they heard and saw.
