The Keshet Center,
an early childhood enrichment program, is located in Moshav Shomera on
Israel's northern border with Lebanon. The Center opened in 2000 and currently
operates with the support of the Jewish Agency. The center provides enrichment
programs to 20 early childhood classes within the population of the Regional
Council of Maale Yosef.
Many of the settlements
are literally on the border and are sparsely populated. Therefore, most
of the programs have children aged 3-6 in the same educational framework.
Transportation to
the Center is provided by the Regional Council. The children participate
in the program in groups of 30 per visit, along with their regular classroom
teachers and two professionals from the Keshet Center.
The
main theme this year is the Diaspora Jewish communities – the first
topic was "Jews of Morocco," the second was "Jews of Kurdistan."
The majority of the population of Maale Yosef region is originally from
either Kurdistan or Morocco. The Keshet Center program attempts to connect
the children to their families' Jewish traditions and life style through
art, drama, music, movement and games. .
The Center demonstrates these communities' Jewish heritage
through a rich array of sets and decorations - a market place area with
stands full of goods, different handicrafts workshops, where the children
experience the typical arts and crafts of the special community, such
as: embroidery, weaving, chiseling, clay work and silversmith/ goldsmith.
During
the time that preparations for the Center's opening were underway, families
were asked to send in materials about the Jewish communities in Morocco
and Kurdistan. The response was gratifying; resulting in more families'
becoming involved in the Center's activities and sharing traditional fabrics,
dishes, pictures, music cassettes and more. Mothers and grandmothers sent
traditional foods and recipes. All the items became part of the regular
exhibition; very quickly all the settlements in the region were busy with
this project. As a result of this enthusiastic response, we have decided
to expand our activities to include parents and children during the months
of May and June. We plan to highlight other Diaspora Jewish communities
in the year ahead.
