visiting
both modern and ancient sites, studying the country, its development,
communities, learning about early childhood practices in Israel
and meeting with peers provides early childhood educators with
a unique experience to take back to their Diaspora classroom.
Every year
groups of early childhood professionals from different communities
around the world come to Israel for in service seminars lasting
anywhere from two weeks to a month. The seminar program, designed
in collaboration with the community, aims to create a Jewish experience
in Israel that will respond to the specific needs of the participants,
on a personal and a professional level. Programs usually include
text study, field trips in different areas of the country, presentations
and workshops given by early childhood specialists and sessions
devoted to translating the experience into the language of the
early childhood classroom.

During
1999 and 2000 groups of early childhood educators from the
United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain participated
in Israel seminars. Their Israel experience was comprised
of visits to sites of historical significance in Israel,
study of Jewish sources, visits to early childhood centers
and meetings with Israeli colleagues. The Canadian seminar
was unusual in that it was three weeks long. The length
of the seminar allowed us to include an almost daily Hebrew
ulpan, more workshops and visits to both the North and the
South. Some 150 individuals participated in the three groups.
