8. CARTOONS & CARICATURES
Goal
Develop understanding of evolution of modern antisemitism into and
beyond the Shoa.
Materials
Cartoons of an Antisemitic nature, from the Dreyfus case and other incidents.
Cartoons may be shown in photocopy or on transparencies with overhead
projector.
Procedure
- Distribute a number of cartoons from this serei.
- Ask the group to look at the physical representations of the Jew and note the era in which it appeared. Review together the similarities and differences.
- The themes you should note are the physical representation: large, hooked nose; arrogance; craftiness;
Examine the myths behind the cartoons:
Jews and power; Jews and money; public enemy number one; the
Jew exploiting his host country (France) and prepared to destroy it.
How is Emile Zola shown?
A non-Jew who supports Dreyfus for his own interests.
- Now show later cartoons. How do the earlier ones link up with these?
