I see him but not now (Num. 24: 17). Of
these words, some we fulfilled in that very hour [when Balaam uttered
them], some later, and some [will be fulfilled] at the time of King Messiah.
We have learned: The Holy One, blessed be He, is ready to rebuild Jerusalem
and to reveal to her a star which is fixed and sparkles with seventy rays
and seventy flames streaming from it in the middle of the firmament...
and it will shine and flame for seventy days. It will appear on the sixth
day [of the week], on the twenty fifth day of the sixth month; and on
the seventh day, at the end of seventy days, it will disappear. On the
first day! it will appear in the city of Rome. And on that day three lofty
walls of that city of Rome will collapse, and a mighty palace will fall,
and the ruler of that city will die. Then that star will spread out so
as to be seen in the [whole] world. And at that time mighty wars will
be stirred up in the world, on all four sides, and no faith will be found
among the nations. And in the middle of the world that star will shine
in the center of the firmament. A great king will arise and rule the world,
and his spirit will be proud over all kings, and he will stir up wars
on two sides, and he will vanquish them. And on the day on which the star
appears, the Holy Land will tremble to [a distance of] forty-five miles
around the place in which stood the Temple. And a cave will be revealed
under the earth, and from that cave a mighty fire will come forth to consume
the world. And from that cave a great supernal branch [or bird] will spread
which will rule the whole world. And to it will be given the kingship,
and the supernal saints will gather around it. Then will be revealed King
Messiah in the whole world, and to him will kingship be given. And in
the hour in which he will be revealed the children of the world will be
in the midst of one calamity after another, and the enemies of Israel
will wax strong. And then the spirit of the Messiah will be stirred up
against them, and he will destroy sinful Edom and burn the whole Land
of Seir with fire... And at that time the Holy One, blessed be He, will
raise up the dead of His people and death will be forgotten by them...
