Vision and Covenant | Apocalypse – Abraham Abulafia
  Apocalypse – Abraham Abulafia

At that time I, Berekhyahu ben Shalwiel, servant of the Lord God of Israel, put my soul into my hand and beseeched Him to let me know what will be the end of our people as a result of these wars. And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, three heroes pursuing one another and running one after the other. Each was as far from the other as a bowshot, and each said to the other: "Run and fight me!" And I saw, and behold, the first ran toward the second, and the second fled from before him, and while fleeing he shot at him a sharpened arrow. And the arrow fell before his feet and hit a creeping stone and overturned it, and then hit his foot and remained stuck in it. And the man let loose an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said: "Woe to me, Lord God of my fathers, for the arrow which hit me will kill me because of the poison which is in it!" And he was still speaking when his foot swelled up like a skin full of wind, and within a moment the pain increased and all his body felt it, until his limbs and flesh swelled like yeast.
And when I heard the sound of his cry, I was filled with compassion for him and I ran and approached him and whispered into his ear, and his pain fled from all his body because of my whisper. And when the first hero, who had shot him in his foot with his arrow, saw that his wound was healed through my whisper, he ran to him with his spear and struck him in his navel and pierced his belly, and his guts spilled out upon the earth and he fell down there and died. And when the third one saw that the first one killed the second one, he ran after the first one with his sword drawn in his hand, and struck him once, and a second time, and a third time, until ten strokes, and he died from the tenth.
And I approached the swordsman and greeted him and said to him: "The Lord be with you, hero of war! Please, my Lord, tell me the meaning of this war which I saw in a vision!" And he showed me an old man with a hoary head sitting on the chair of judgment, and his garments were violet and purple. And he said: "Go, ask that man who sits on the mount of judgment, and he will tell you and let you know what are these wars and what is their end, since he is from the children of your people."'
And I ascended the mount of judgment and approached the old man and knelt down and fell on my face upon the earth before his feet. And he placed his two hands upon me and raised me up on my feet before him. And he said to me:
"My son, peace be your coming, peace, peace be unto you and unto all those who love you, for you were saved from the wars, and in all my wars you became victorious. And now, know and understand that for many days and years I have sat here hoping you would come. And now, behold, I shall tell you the meaning of the wars which you saw.
"The three heroes who pursued one another are three kings who will arise in three corners of the earth, the adherents of three contrary views. And they will wage war against one another, and when they muster their camps, army against army, the first, the southern one, will send word to the second, the northern one, and the second will flee from before his words. And the messenger of the first one, who caused him to flee with his words at first, will run after him and will tell him a second thing which will enter his heart like an arrow. And the creeping stone that you saw is a frightening, terrifying thought which creeps and attracts the word as the [lode] stone attracts iron with its inherent power. And the word will touch the essence of the kingdom, and because of it the heart of the second king will die in him. And when his heart dies, the sages of his people will arise to advise him, and their advice will cause his heart to rest for a time from his anguish. And this is the whisper which you whispered into his ear, and through it he was healed from the poison of the arrow of the thought which struck him.
"And that which you then saw, that the first hero struck him a second time, that means that he will add bitter words to his words, and with them he will prevail and will take away his kingdom from him and [the second king] will die.
"And that which you saw, that the third struck the first one who defeated the second, and that he struck him a second and a third time, and went on to strike him four and five times until the end of ten strokes – that is the eastern king who will defeat the southern one who slew the northern one, according to the word of the Lord who strikes the tenth blow always in accordance with our deserts. This is why you said to him, 'The Lord be with you,' when you asked him to tell you the meaning of the war. And as for him sending you to me, [that was done] because we are of the Children of Israel, and he is not of the children of our people, but merely one whom the Lord sent to fight for us against all our enemies.
"The three kings have three heroic names, like the names of their supernal [i.e., heavenly] patrons. The name of the first is Qadriel, and the name of the second is Magdiel, and the name of the third is Alfiel. And the name of the hero whom you saw in a vision in the beginning [i.e., prior to the fight of the three] is Turiel. And my name is Yehoel, for I deigned to speak to you for many years. Therefore your name shall be called from now on in Israel, Roiel the Seer son of M'qoriel, who lives because you were hewn from the source of life and you have chosen life, and with life shall you live. And alive are the children of Abraham and Isaac and Israel our fathers, and all those who adhere to them will adhere to the God of Truth and will live with us.
"And behold there is a fifth hero, he is my Messiah who will rule after the war of the four kingdoms. This is the meaning which is revealed to all, but the hidden meaning will be understood only by him whose mind understands…"
