IN THE DAY THAT GOD CREATED MAN. This supports R. Leazar's
teaching: Three miracles were performed on that day: on that very day
they were created, they cohabited, and they produced offspring.
Ben Azzai said: THIS IS THE BOOK OF THE DESCENDANTS OF ADAM is a great
principle of the Torah. R. Akiba said: But thou shalt love thy neighbour
as thyself (Lev. XIX, 18) is even a greater principle. Hence5 you must
not say, Since I have been put to shame, let my neighbour be put to shame.
R. Tanhuma said: If you do so, know whom you put to shame, [for] In the
likeness of God made He him.

An idolater came before Shammai. He said to him: Convert
me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on
one foot. He [Shammai] pushed him away with the builder's cubit-measure
which was in his hand. He came before Hillel, who converted him. He said
to him: What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the
whole, complete Torah and the rest is its commentary thereof. Go and learn.
