Ecclesiastes - Chapter 1
1 The words of Koheleth, the son of David,
king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; vanity of vanities,
all is vanity. 3 What profit hath man of all his labour wherein he laboureth
under the sun? 4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh;
and the earth abideth for ever. 5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth
down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth. 6 The wind goeth toward
the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually
in its circuit, and the wind returneth again to its circuits. 7 All the
rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither
the rivers go, thither they go again. 8 All things toil to weariness;
man cannot utter it, the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear
filled with hearing. 9 That which hath been is that which shall be, and
that which hath been done is that which shall be done; and there is nothing
new under the sun. 10 Is there a thing whereof it is said: 'See, this
is new'?--it hath been already, in the ages which were before us. 11 There
is no remembrance of them of former times; neither shall there be any
remembrance of them of latter times that are to come, among those that
shall come after.
12 I Koheleth have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I applied
my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all things that
are done under heaven; it is a sore task that God hath given to the sons
of men to be exercised therewith. 14 I have seen all the works that are
done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting
cannot be numbered. 16 I spoke with my own heart, saying: 'Lo, I have
gotten great wisdom, more also than all that were before me over Jerusalem';
yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. 17 And
I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly--I perceived
that this also was a striving after wind. 18 For in much wisdom is much
vexation; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
Ecclesiastes - Chapter 3
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every
purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes - Chapter 9
7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry
heart; for God hath already accepted thy works. 8 Let thy garments be
always white; and let thy head lack no oil. 9 Enjoy life with the wife
whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which He hath
given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity; for that is thy
portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun.
10 Whatsoever thy hand attaineth to do by thy strength, that do; for there
is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither
thou goest.
Ecclesiastes - Chapter 12
1 Remember then thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before
the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say: 'I have
no pleasure in them'; 2 Before the sun, and the light, and the moon, and
the stars, are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain; 3 In the
day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall
bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those
that look out shall be darkened in the windows, 4 And the doors shall
be shut in the street, when the sound of the grinding is low; and one
shall start up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music
shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is
high, and terrors shall be in the way; and the almond-tree shall blossom,
and the grasshopper shall drag itself along, and the caperberry shall
fail; because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the
streets; 6 Before the silver cord is snapped asunder, and the golden bowl
is shattered, and the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel
falleth shattered, into the pit; 7 And the dust returneth to the earth
as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it. 8 Vanity of
vanities, saith Koheleth; all is vanity.
