About Novosibirsk
Novosibirsk lies on the shores of the Ob River in the south-western Siberian
steppe and is the scientific and cultural capital of Siberia. The city
was founded in 1884 along the trans-Siberian railway.
The Jewish community numbers over 10,000 in an overall population of
1.5 million. The Jewish population of the entire region stands at about
30,000. The community's origins date back to the 19th century, when Jews
were not allowed to live in the city; in the 20th century, it provided
asylum for political refugees.
From 1939-41, Polish Jewish refugees were exiled to Siberia. After the
invasion of the USSR by Nazi Germany in June 1941, they were joined by
evacuees and refugees from the western USSR. Novosibirsk's status as a
cultural and scientific center attracted more Jews to live there after
the Second World War.
In 1969, it was from Novosibirsk that Yasha Kazakov - later Yaakov Kedmi,
the Director of "Nativ"- became the first Jew to dare challenge
the Soviet government and renounce his Soviet citizenship. In the 70s,
the city had a clandestine network of Hebrew teachers and language classes.
Since the beginning of the wave of Aliyah, it is estimated that about
10,000 olim came to Israel from Novosibirsk (the approximation is due
to the fact that the city of origin was not originally documented in the
early years of aliya).
Today, the city has a Jewish Agency office which is responsible for the
Ulpanim for Hebrew and Jewish Identity, as well as for youth and student
activities. The city also has both Chabad and Reform synagogues, Jewish
day and supplemental schools, and an Israel Cultural Center.
