Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Day
Three Years since the Assassination
Commemoration Activities
Israel from Past to Future
This is a history exercise using the Rabin
biography and the major events
which should be printed for all participants. You will also need to prepare
worksheets with the chart below* filling in ahead of time the main dates
and life events you wish to address and prepare a large sheet of posterboard
to write up conclusions from the discussion.
1. Trigger
Sit participants in a circle in groups no larger than 15. Ask them if
there has been an important interaction between them or their parents
an a major historical event. Take responses in sequence and then discuss
whether we are all actors in or affected by historical events.
2. Divide into small groups and distribute the documents and charts.
Each group fills in their charts*, noting first the major events in Israel's
history for the dates given (column 3).
3. Before they fill in the fourth column, ask participants to bear
in mind questions like:
What is the larger significance of Rabin's decision to renounce his engineering
studies for a career in the army? Participants should note which events
changed Yitzhak Rabin's life and how.
4. In the final column, participants need only address which events
are a direct outcome of Rabin's influence and why.
5. Each group should now discuss the kind of future Yitzhak Rabin
- among other leaders - was building for Israel and how much of this
legacy remains 3 years after his assassination.
6. Present these findings and write them on the posterboard.
These conclusions may be used as part of a ceremony.
