Israel in Lebanon 1982-1998

One of the major public debates in Israel is currently the presence of the IDF in Lebanon, and we bring below some updates on the latest positions on this issue for exploration in the form of a structured discussion.

None of us is a diplomatic, military and strategic prophet with the answers to what could and should be done; our own positions are usually based on values and attitudes we hold dear. By using the debate and the suggested reading, we hope that young people will be able to separate some of the opinion and history from the facts and gain a broader perspective.

Activities

Please prepare access to the webservers specified below by browsing to the designated urls if you wish your group to work online; you may alternatively print and photocopy the articles for participants.

Ask your group:

Should the IDF Pull Out of the Security Zone in Southern Lebanon?
Yes/No

WHY?

Now ask WHY? (one short answer per person)

Qualify your vote by opening the topic, with the following statements on the implications.

Divide the group into subgroups of 5 and ask each member to adopt one of the following statements to present to their partners. In order to do so creditably, ask groups to surf to or read the articles mentioned below.

  • Don't pull out, because the IDF is protecting northern Israel from attack
  • It's vital to pull out unilaterally because it is costing too many soldiers' lives
  • Make peace with Syria now and pull out of Lebanon
  • Pull out unilaterally in stages providing substitute security measures
  • Secure pull-out by first exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on the terrorist organisations
