The Security Fence - POINTS TO PONDER
Please use the following points to process the material presented in
this series, together with information from other web sites related to
the fence issue:
1) Is the path of the fence justified, its existence in theory as a
response to terror justified, or neither?
Hint: Consider the financial implications
of including more outlying settlements, as well as the moral implications
of enclosing certain Palestinian population centers for the sake of including
these settlements.
2) Is it wise to take such a unilateral step?
What is the alternative, if Israel does not build a fence?
3) Does the fence:
a) Inspire more hope, or
b) Create more fear for the future?
4) Is the presence of the fence irreversible?
5) Is the fence political or security oriented?
6) How would you present the issue of the fence to different audiences
in your community/on your campus?
7) To what extent should the government take:
a) US opinion into account?
b) European (EU) opinion into account?
c) International (UN) opinion into account?
d) American Jewish opinion into account?
8) What are the consequences of the fence? Will it:
a) Lead to the dismantling of the PA?
b) Lead to annexation?
c) Calm down the situation?
d) Encourage more terror?
9) Do creation of the fence and the relocation of settlements onto the
Israeli side stave off the demographic ‘threat’ to the Jewish
state?
Hint: Should the prospect that Palestinians
might form the majority of the people living west of the Jordan River
by 2025 affect Israel’s decision to make some kind of border between
it and the Palestinian areas?
