Ramat Hasharon women's basketball coach Orna Ostfeld received the International
Olympic Committee's European Women and Sport trophy in Lausanne, Switzerland
yesterday to mark International Women's Day.
Ostfeld, the Olympic Committee of Israel's candidate, was chosen from
among 68 European candidates, and is one of five women from five continents
to receive an award. The global award went to Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki
of Greece, president of the Athens Games organizing committee.
"As a player, administrator and coach, Ostfeld has contributed to
greater participation by young women at all sporting levels," the
IOC said. "Furthermore, she regularly contributes to the promotion
of women's sport in the media."
Ostfeld played for Israel's women's basketball team, set up the Ramat
Hasharon team, and has been a passionate advocate for funding for women's
sports. Following a 2004 petition filed by Ostfeld and others, the High
Court of Justice ordered the Union of Local Authorities to fund women's
sports associations at a rate of 1.5 times the sum allocated to equivalent
men's associations.
"This has been a great week for me," Ostfeld said yesterday,
the day after her team won the State Cup. "In less than 24 hours,
I have reached two prestigious peaks. The honor gives me more energy to
continue to work to promote women's sports."
Olympic Committee of Israel Chairman Zvi Varshaviak said: "The choice
only strengthens the committee's goal of continuing to act for promoting
women's sports, with the aim of increasing the number of sportswomen and
women coaches prior to the Beijing Olympics and altogether."
