Appendix 1

Below is a chart summarizing the fate of several of the ships bringing illegal immigrants to the shores of Palestine during the war.

On the basis of this table, define the British attitude towards the Jews who managed to escape certain destruction in Europe.

                                Hungary, and Romania, arrested by the
                                British and transferred to detention
                                camps at Tzrifin and Atlit (Palestine).

3. Libertade      700           Passengers caught off the coast of
                                Palestine and transferred to detention
                                camps.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Pacific      1,771           Passengers transferred to the British
                                "Patria" for deportation to Mauritius.
                                Following the ship's sabotage, the
                                deportation order was canceled, and 
                                passengers were transferred to the 
                                detention camp at Atlit.

5. Atlantic     1,880           Passengers deported to Mauritius.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Viturol        120           Passengers deported to the detention
                                camp on Cyprus.

Appendix #2

You are a group of reporters representing an extremely influential American newspaper. You have been sent by your editor to cover an incident connected to the illegal immigration to Palestine. You are now on the beach near Haifa, witnessing the fate of one of the immigrant ships. Cover this incident. [Describe the passengers, who they are, where they have come from, what they have gone through. Write supposed interviews with the parties involved. Express your opinion on the British policy towards the illegal immigration.]


Appendix #3

Using the table, map, and photographs, write down the salient characteristics of illegal immigration to Palestine after the war.
