1922

British Mandate confirmed by League of Nations, including commitment to historic Jewish connection to their homeland.

Churchill White Paper ["First"] separates Transjordan from the area to be affected by the "Jewish national home" provisions of the Balfour Declaration and Mandate.

Death of Eliezer ben Yehuda, pioneer of modern Hebrew.


1924-1932

Fourth Aliyah (mainly from Poland).

1924

Technion founded [Haifa].

1925

Hebrew University founded [Jerusalem].

Revisionist movement founded by Zeev Jabotinsky.

Brit Shalom [Covenant of Peace] movement founded, led by Martin Buber.

1926

First Hebron riots incite Arab crowds against Jewish residents of town, end in death and bloodshed for Jewish inhabitants.
1929

August - Arabs riot in Jerusalem; Massacres of Jews in Hebron and Safed.

British despatch Shaw Commission to investigate.

Jewish Agency for Israel expanded to include non-Zionists.

1930

Hope-Simpson Inquiry follows recommendations of Shaw Commission in analysis of land opportunities.

Leads to:
October - The Passfield "Second" White Paper, first attempt at British disengagement from the "Jewish national home" commitments of the Declaration and the Mandate. Limits Jewish immigration to Eretz Yisrael.

1931

The Yishuv displays the Palestine Pavillon at the International Colonial Exposition in Paris.

Despite Ramsay MacDonald's letter to Chaim Weizmann, effectively nullifying clauses of the Passfield White Paper, White Paper policy is implemented.

Irgun Zva'i Leumi [Etzel] Jewish underground organization founded, split from mainstream Haganah.
