Now in English: Aba Gefen's Story - From Smuggling Jews to Israel to Palestinian Terror
The book, a translation and updating of the author's Hebrew work published under the title 'Soul Searching', is the story of Israel intertwined with the personal story of a man who contributed much to Israel's history, security and foreign relations.
Dr. Aba Gefen, Holocaust survivor, NKVD interrogator of Nazis, a leader of the Brichah organization (that smuggled Jews to Israel following the Second World War), Mossad station head in Italy, Consul General in Ottawa and Ambassador to Argentina and to Rumania, and advisor to the Foreign Minister, analyses the political and military history of the State of Israel, leading up to the election of Ariel Sharon as Prime Minister. The book places Israel's current situation in a broader perspective.
Gefen makes fascinating reading when he analyzes the role he played in transporting Jews to safety during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, hunting down Nazi collaborators after the war, and his role with the Brichah. As head of the Austrian section of the Brichah he worked hand in hand with the US Army, and he explains the methods his organization used to smuggle the maximum number of Jews to Mandatory Palestine. Also breathtaking are behind-the-scenes details of Mossad affairs, and covert operations, including a detailed account of his role in bringing to justice a turncoat agent, as well as accounts of the Lavon Affair, and the secret visits King Hussein of Jordan had with Israeli officials and heads of state. Of importance is his description of the role, which Ceausecu played in arranging Sadat's visit to Jerusalem and the important role, which Rumania played as a window to the Communist World, when other diplomatic channels to the were closed.
