SITUATION IN ISRAEL AND ITS IMPACT ON ALIYAH AND HASBARAH - AT CENTER OF DISCUSSIONS BY JEWISH AGENCY SHLICHIM IN FSU Despite tense security situation, 34,000 immigrated from FSU in 2001 Information sessions regarding the situation in Israel, the increasing number of crisis situations and a stronger sense of Jewish identity among olim from the FSU - are just some of the issues that were discussed at the annual Conference of Jewish Agency shlichim in the FSU this week. The Conference took place at Ma'aleh Hahamisha near Jerusalem. Thirty Jewish Agency shlichim from all over the FSU attended the Conference in order to discuss Jewish Agency activity in the year 2002. This is the first time in many years that the Jewish Agency holds its annual conference of FSU shlichim in Israel, instead of the FSU, in an effort to send a message of solidarity with the State of Israel and emphasize its centrality to the organization's activities. The update on Israel was presented by TV-Channel 2 commentator Aharon Barnea; Col. (Res.) Shalom Harari - who researches terror at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center; and former IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. (Res.) Ephraim Lapid. The shlichim met with Jewish Agency Chair Sallai Meridor, JAFI Treasurer Chaim Chesler, Nativ Director Zvi Magen, Jewish Agency Director General, Gen (Res.) Giora Rom, Deputy Director General Ministry of Absorption Chanoch Zimmer and other professionals in the field of aliyah and absorption.
