Richard Joel, the President and International Director of Hillel, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, welcomes Ambassador Alon Pinkas, the Israeli Consul General in New York to the 2001 Schusterman Hillel International Professional Staff Conference, which took place in Princeton, New Jersey, and was attended by over 600 Hillel Staff from the USA, Canada, Israel, Russia, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.
Joel also announced the establishment of Hillel's new Campus Israel Affairs Department in conjunction with the Jewish Agency for Israel and introduced Michael Jankelowiz, who will serve as the first Shalliach (emissary) from Israel to this newly created department.

  • $12,000 - Jewish Agency allocation for the year 2001 to Hila-Israel Committee for Equality in Education for the Social and Community Involvement Course - within the framework of projects that foster "mutual respect"

  • $10,000 - Jewish Agency allocation for the year 2001 to JCT - Center for Business Ethics for the 'In the Marketplace' project within the framework of support of "unity".

  • $ 10,000 - Jewish Agency allocation for the year 2001 to New Moon for TIMNA project - within the framework of allocations enhancing "Jewish identity".

  • 42,763 new immigrants arrived in Israel since the beginning of 2001. 33,094 from the former Soviet Union.

  • 257 olim arrived to Israel this week; 115 from the FSU and East Europe, 84 from Ethiopia, the others from France, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, the USA, Canada and India.
