SOUTH AMERICA: AFFLUENT JEWISH FAMILIES ALSO DOWN TO PENURY

Jewish Agency emissary reported on his impressions from his visit to South America, particularly to Uruguay and Argentina

During a recent trip to Argentina and Uruguay, Yair Kalush, head of the Jewish Agency for Israel; Israel Aliyah Center of Greater Washington in Rockville, witnessed the growing poverty in both countries. Formerly wealthy and middle-class people have been reduced to penury.

Kalush described one family that had gone on vacations abroad twice a year in the past, owned two houses and donated generously to Jewish charities, was having trouble feeding itself before coming on aliyah recently.

In Montevideo, the Jewish Community Center provides free lunch to 35 community members daily, but should be feeding 100 if money was available. A no charge pharmacy also has been set up to provide medicine for the elderly.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington invited Yair Kalush to brief the staff on the observations of his recent visit there.
