UPDATED INFORMATION ON A CHANGING WORLD IN "ENCYCLOPEDIC ATLAS OF THE WORLD"

The world continouslychanges before our eyes. Countries are created, join together, separate, thousands of people migrate to new countries, change their ethnic make up and social structure, enrich cultures and also create disputes. Medicine and science prolong life expectancy and enhance our knowledge of the world, but new and old diseases continue to threaten the lives of millions. The economy is now global, for better or for worse, as is the environment and the nuclear threat.

"The Encyclopedic Atlas of the World" is edited by Oren Nahary, foreign news editor for Israel TV's Channel One, to fill a need for updated information in a changing world. Alongside detailed maps of countries around the world, the atlas contains a plethora of information about each and every country - history, demography, military, economic, religions, culture, communications and more - in every field, the data are presented in a consistent, organized format enabling the reader to compare different countries.

"The Encyclopedic Atlas of the World" is the first book of its kind in Israel - a new generation of world atlases. It is novel not only in its design, but also in the type of information it contains. The book is a combination of geographic atlas and encyclopedia of countries around the world. In addition to traditional information such as the flag, area, population, currency and the like, the atlas also presents current data on the quality of life (based on a comparative index used by the UN), literacy rates, infant mortality and life expectancy, as well as a variety of indices on technology strength, such as the number of computers and internet users. Each of the world's 192 countries has one, and in some cases two or three pages, which present the reader with a complex, fascinating picture of the country and its place in our modern world. The continents of the globe appear in separate chapters, accompanied by maps.

"The Encyclopedic Atlas of the World" pays particular attention to the economy, which is gradually superseding military power as the key component in the power of world nations. Important events in the country's history over the last century are also presented in considerable detail. Trivia too, is not neglected. Information appears throughout the atlas in frames, containing exciting snippets on a range of subjects, from countries which may disappear by the year 2050, the impact of AIDS on life expectancy in Zambia, through to the connection between port and the Rapaport family, lending a different perspective to the country and its culture.
