CHANUKKA IN TASHKENT, AMONG MILLIONS OF MUSLIMS

Jewish Agency Delegation Organizes Chanukka Celebrations in Uzbeki Capital, with Representatives of the Local Jewish Community and the Israeli Embassy

Chanukka celebrations were held in the Uzbeki capital, Tashkent, in the heart of the Muslim republics (overall population 23 million), attended by representatives of the 8,000-strong local Jewish community and JAFI representatives who initiated the event, as well as representatives of the Israeli Embassy and Jewish organizations.

In recent months, Uzbekistan reached the headlines in Israel and worldwide due to its common border with Afghanistan, the existence of a Jewish community and Jewish Agency activity there.

The Hanukkiah was lit by Meir Tal, head of the Jewish Agency delegation for the South Caucasus and Asia and Israeli ambassador Noah Ben Gendler. Among the participants were a local Hebrew teacher, a student studying computers, Jewish Agency spokesman Ephraim Lapid, Victoria Dolinski-a journalist from Radio Reka, and Jewish Agency visitors to Tachkent on a hasbarah campaign. A children's choir entertained the audience with Chanukka songs.
