YEVGENNY STANOVSKY: NEW PRESIDENT OF RUSSIAN JEWISH CONGRESS

Replaced Leonid Navzalin who was elected to the Upper House of Russian Parliament

This week, the board of the Russian Jewish Congress elected Yevgenny Stanovsky as its new president, to replace Leonid Navzalin, who was elected to the upper house of the Duma (the Russian parliament) for the Mordovia province. To date the 42-year old Stanovsky served as vice president of the Congress and dealt primarily with educational projects. He also held a number of other positions, including: president of the Institute for Israel and Middle East Studies in Moscow, head of the faculty for the Israel Studies at the National University of Moscow, member of the World Jewish Congress, president of the "Ariel" group which supplies raw materials and equipment for the metal and other industries.

There is disagreement among Russia's Jewish community leaders regarding the future of the Russian Jewish Congress under its new leadership. Many claim that Stanovsky's election will not strengthen the Congress as he is not very well known in Russia's business community and among foreign Jewish organizations. The Congress may therefore lose some of its prestige. Nevertheless, others have noted Stanovsky's conscientiousness and willingness to dedicate much of his time to promoting the Jewish community and believe that this will bring the community considerable achievements.

Karol Ungar, head of the Jewish Agency delegation in Russia, said that the Jewish Agency has an excellent relationship with Stanovsky and expressed the hope that there will be productive cooperation in the future. According to Ungar, Stanovsky appreciates Jewish Agency activity in the area and views the Agency as a partner: "We have accepted a proposal for cooperation on several educational projects, particularly in the field of higher education, and we will discuss them at the next meeting of JAFI shlichim in the FSU due to take place in Jerusalem at the end of December," said Ungar.
