BUCHAREST: CANDLE-LIGHTING CEREMONY AS A MARK OF SOLIDARITY WITH MISSING NAVIGATOR RON ARAD
 
Solidarity Gathering Held in the Presence of Rumanian Prime Minister, Members of Parliament and Hundreds of Guests

A solidarity gathering for the release of captured Air Force navigator Ron Arad took place in the Rumanian capital Bucharest, on Tuesday. The ceremony was attended by Rumanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastassa, Israeli ambassador Sender Mazor and some 400 guests including ministers, MP's, Israeli and Rumanian businesspeople, and members of the Jewish community in Rumania. The event was organized by the Jewish Agency, the Israeli embassy in Rumania and the Lauder Foundation.

During the evening, Rumania's Chief Rabbi Menchem Hacohen and Rumania's Chief Patriarch, lit a candle for the release of Ron Arad.

Jewish Agency shlicha in Rumania,Tova Bin Nun said that the event was the result of a meeting in July between the Rumanian Prime Minister and Batya Arad, mother of Ron Arad.

The hall was decorated with 300 blue balloons, with the inscription "Release Ron Arad" written in white . The only Jewish school in Rumania, "Reut", dedicated the past week of studies to the story of Ron Arad's capture.

Some 14,000 Jews currently live in Rumania. Over the last seven years 2,500 Jews came on aliyah from Rumania.
