JEWISH AGENCY ALLOCATES NIS 1 MILLION TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ISRAEL'S DISABLED

In 2002, the Jewish Agency will allocate more than NIS 1 million for projects to improve the quality of life for Israel's disabled population, and groups with special needs. The support will be provided through the Jewish Agency's allocations program, which each year gives NIS 10 million to organizations working to improve the quality of life in Israel.

Among the many organizations supported by the Jewish Agency are the Etgarim (Challenges) association that encourages sports activities among healthy and disabled youngsters, the Association for Ties Between Industry and the Community that encourages initiatives among young healthy and disabled athletes, and the Kehilateinu (Our Community) organization that helps the disabled live and integrate among the community at large.

The Jewish Agency will also support the following: a project run by the Deaf Association that offers deaf children the opportunity to celebrate bar/bat mitzvah; a project run by the "Carmel Zevulun" Regional School that teaches sign language to schoolchildren and teachers; the "Lir'ot Balev" (Seeing with the Heart) project run by the Beit Ross Community Center; pupils attending the School for the Blind, fostering tolerance towards groups with special needs as well as volunteer work in the community; a project run by the "Machon Bet David" to help the blind and deaf increase their sense of Jewish identity.

In addition, several other projects will receive Jewish Agency support, including: Akim Israel, which encourages an Olympic five-a-side football team of young athletes that includes teenagers who are mentally disabled; Akim Jerusalem - for its "Contribution to the Community" project that combines youth movement activities with that of mentally disabled youngsters; the Shalva organization (which helps families with disabled children) for a community center for disabled children; Beit Issy Shapira in Raanana for a project to promote tolerance towards children with development problems; the "Sulam" organization, for a project to assist and encourage disabled children; and the "Noar LeNoar" (Youth for Youth) movement, which works to integrate children with special needs.
