AFTER A LONG BREAK - 130 JEWISH TEENAGERS FROM JOHANNESBURG ARRIVE IN ISRAEL FOR ACADEMIC STUDIES One hundred thirty Jewish high school students from South Africa arrived in Israel this week for a special Jewish Agency educational program to integrate in high-school studies next year. The Israeli government and the Jewish Agency recently decided to give the South African Jewish community priority with regard to education and aliyah activity in coming years. This is due to the community's difficult situation. The new program is designed to help Jewish high-school graduates in South Africa to strengthen their Jewish identity through a extended stay in Israel, combining academic studies with activities benefiting Israel and Israeli society. The students, entering the 12th grade at the King David and Yeshiva College high schools in Johannesburg, account for a third of the students their age in the two schools. During their stay in Israel, the youth will tour various institutions in Israel, such as universities, colleges, yeshivot and ulpanot, where they will meet with principals and students who recently made aliyah and are studying at these institutions. They will also help teach English at different state schools.
