THE ECONOMY Israel Aircraft Industries won a $23 million contract for upgrading dozens of Thai army helicopters. The deal to upgrade "Sikorski" helicopters is considered large for the size of the plant, a Tel-Aviv branch of the IAI. Other Israeli security companies have handled transactions for Thailand in the past. Elbit Systems, for example, signed a contract to upgrade F-5 fighter aircraft for the Thai Air Force, and Tadiran Specterlink supplied Thailand with search and rescue systems for helicopter pilots, worth $12 million. The Israeli insurance company Davidof is currently forming a company for the supply of medical services in India. Located in New Delhi, the new company, Medsame India, handles medical services and health policies for local employers. The company will operate a round-the-clock call center manned by doctors, will provide emergency treatment and supplementary medicine and will assist in referring patients to doctors in other countries. The Israeli company Electronic Line, which manufactures systems for monitoring and controlling homes and home appliances, has sold 15% of the company to the American limited partnership Hurst Argyle for NIS 67 million. The Israeli company's systems are based on cellular communications, enabling control from anywhere in the world in numerous domestic functions, such as receiving information about a burglary, open windows, power failures or a child returning home. Hurst Argyle owns the second largest independent broadcasting station in the U.S. Record job losses: The giant company Comverse, which has a large development center in Israel, is laying off more than a thousand workers - half in Israel and the rest overseas. Comverse, based in the U.S., is the world's leading company for voice mailboxes and cellular and on-line telephony operators. The company recently entered a crisis that included a sharp drop in the sales of mailbox systems. Last June, the company was forced to lay off 400 employees in an effort to save costs.
