1ST 11 ARAVA COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE 50 YEARS N.I.S. 12 MILLION TO DEVELOP REGION As part of the events celebrating 50 years since the establishment of the first 11 communities in the Arava (celebrations tol begin next week), a new project is to be launched jointly by the Ayalot Regional Council, together with the Public Works Department (Ma'atz) and the Ministry of Transport, in which NIS 12 million will be invested in infrastructure development, and widening and repairing roads in the area. Head of the Ayalot Regional Council Udi Gath noted that the project will include the construction of underpasses, the enlargement of main junctions, the building of new junctions, and the extention of the Arava Road by 3 km. to the entrance to the regional school beside Kibbutz Yotvata. Gath added that an additional NIS 30 million will be invested in developing tourist attractions, restaurants and accommodation sites in the area. The IDF outpost at Kibbutz Yotvata, which was the third Nachal Army outpost built in Israel, was set up in October 1951, becoming the first community established in the southern Arava. Other communities soon followed. Within the framework of the 50th anniversary celebrations, special sites that served the original settlers will be reconstructed.
