RISE IN UNEMPLOYMENT CONTINUES

The number of unemployed in Israel this month reached 235,000 job seekers, comprising 9.3% of the workforce. This information published today by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

In Israel it is estimated that the increased severity of the state of the Israeli employment market stems from the world economic crisis and the harsh security situation since the outbreak of violence in September 2000.

The Ministry of Finance, the Histadrut Workers' Union and the employers are attempting to reach a package agreement that will bring an end to worker slowdowns and strikes. This week the Knesset voted to freeze the salaries of senior wage earners, which includes senior wage earners in the market, elected officials among them, hoping to serve as a personal example to other workers.
