FIRST TIME IN JEWISH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN US:
"ISRAEL EDUCATION MONTH"

Israel Education Month is taking place for the first time in Jewish educational institutions in the US at the joint initiative of the Jewish Agency Education Department and the UJC. The month's events were kicked off last week with Tu B'Shvat celebrations.

According to Alan Hoffman, director-general of the Jewish Agency's Education Department, the decision to hold Israel Education Month was the result of concern that the decline in the number of young people taking part in programs in Israel would jeopardize future relations between North American Jewry and Israel. "A month of education about Israel is designed to renew the commitment to develop and deepen long-term relations," he said.

All the educational streams as well as formal and informal educational institutions in the US will participate in Israel Education Month. Programs sponsored by the Jewish Agency for schools are intended to raise consciousness and to provide new tools for educators dealing with Jewish education.

A delegation of educators including leading experts from Israel will help in the implementing educational programs about Israel. The Education Department opened a special Internet site, which suggests new tools, such as learning about Israeli geography through the site, including panoramas of Israel, and seven new Israeli documentary films as "texts" for the study of Israeli society. The site also offers a number of courses. The "Education Ambassador," course for instance trains participants (from high school age to adult), to understand and advocate for Israel. And in a virtual tour of Massada, an Israeli guide will take high school students around Massada while they are sitting in their classrooms. The Internet site is http://www.jajz-ed.org.il/iem/
