A SYMBOLIC NUMBER: 55 IMMIGRANTS FROM UKRAINE ARRIVE IN ISRAEL - THE SAME NUMBER AS THE AGE OF THE STATE

One of the new immigrants from Ukraine who arrived in Israel this week

Fifty-five new immigrants from Ukraine arrived in Israel this week - the same number as the age of the State. Despite - and because of - the drop in aliyah, a group of Ukrainian Jews decided to make aliyah specifically now.

Alex Katz, head of the Jewish Agency delegation in Ukraine, said that the Jewish Agency is investing tremendous effort in increasing aliyah. Despite concern over the security situation, there continues to be great interest in Israel, he said.

In 2002, over 7,000 people immigrated to Israel from Ukraine. The county's Jewish community numbers some 100,000.
