First-of-its-kind experimental project

COOPERATION BETWEEN JEWISH AGENCY & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES TO TRAIN TEENAGERS FOR SUMMER JOBS

The demand for previous work experience has created a Catch- 22 situation, which, combined with the economic situation, makes it difficult for teenagers to get summer jobs. In response, the Jewish Agency's Partnership 2000 in the Tsahar region (Safed, Hatzor, and Rosh Pina) and the local employment services have launched an experimental project - the first of its kind in Israel - that provides job search workshops. Fifty students at the ORT school in Hatzor will take part in the project, which also deals with conduct at the workplace, and includes a ten-day internship with employers in various fields, ranging from computerized graphics to veterinary services. 16 employers have already agreed to participate in the project; at its conclusion, participants will receive stipends funded by Partnership 2000.

According to David Katz, the regional psychologist at the employment services in Hatzor and one of the initiators of the project, the experience the youngsters get will make it easier for them to find jobs. If the pilot is successful, it will be replicated in other locations.
