NEW JEWISH STUDIES CENTER AT HU The Hebrew University this week dedicated the Mandel Institute of Jewish Studies on its Mt. Scopus campus. The following day, a program was held to mark the founding of the Scholion Interdisciplinary Research Center in Jewish Studies, within the framework of the Mandel Institute. It focused on how the famous Unetaneh Tokef prayer said on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur has metamorphosed from its origin in ancient times, in recent years becoming adapted by a secular kibbutz as a memorial to members lost in the Yom Kippur War. The program was part of a two-day conference called "Bella Libellorum: Books and Works Fighting for Their Lives," which was organized by the Scholion research group on "Modes of Canonization - the Case of the Cairo Genizah." Hebrew University President Magidor noted that "the Hebrew University, the leading world center of Jewish studies, has begun a strategic policy of creating ties and bridges between various academic specialties within Jewish studies and other areas of knowledge. This process is intended, among other things, to utilize the tremendous resources of knowledge within the university to create an educational, cultural and social discourse within Israel and elsewhere, thus making the university the intellectual meeting place for the Jewish world." The Scholion Interdisciplinary Research Center sponsors two projects - interdisciplinary study groups, each devoted to a particular topic, that meet for three years, and the Mandel Scholars, young post-doctoral scholars from Israel.
