Participants in Jewish Agency youth programs re-enact "illegal" immigration at site of Atlit detention camp

Some 1,200 participants in Jewish Agency educational programs for youth took part this week in a unique reenactment of pre-State "illegal" immigration to Israel. The program was designed to let them to "experience" an important chapter in the history of the State of Israel, and to help them relate to the Zionist idea of building a homeland for the Jewish people.

Participants visited seven sites that deal with aliyah, settlement, and security. Accompanied by a former Palmach fighter, they reenacted an "illegal" immigration operation, which included receiving "coded messages" from "Haganah commanders" on shore, receiving "counterfeit" documents, and being "captured" by the "British" and interned at a "detention camp." The youngsters also toured the ma'apilim camp in Atlit.

The day concluded with a colorful ceremony in the Atlit amphitheater.
