SECURITY BUFFER ZONES BETWEEN ISRAEL AND THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY 17 Israelis killed during the last week. IDF intensifies response Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced tonight the cabinet's decision to establish security buffer zones between Palestinian population centers and Israeli citizens. The Prime Minister clarified that this does not refer to a border but, rather, increasing the obstacles confronting Palestinian terrorists that try to penetrate into Israel. The announcement was made during the Prime Minister's Speech to the Nation, following the escalation of bloodshed and violence against Israelis and accusations of silence against him. Sharon emphasized that Israel is strong and has many ways of overcoming the present predicament. He called upon the citizens of Israel to be united and to condemn the refusal to perform military service - something that creates a false sense of Israeli weakness. Sharon stated that he is striving to arrive at a different peace that will be achieved following a cease fire and on condition that the Palestinian state to be established is completely demilitarized. The speech came at the end of a week drenched with blood. Last Thursday night, three soldiers were killed by a bomb that hit their tank.
