RISE IN NUMBER OF IMMIGRANTS FROM FRANCE;
DEFENSE MINISTER MEETS DOZENS OF ALIYAH CANDIDATES IN PARIS

During his visit to France this week, Minister of Defense Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met dozens of olim who are about to leave for Israel. The meeting was organized by t he Jewish Agency.

There has recently been a 100% upsurge in aliyah from France. From January to September 2002, 1,542 French Jews immigrated to Israel, compared to 749 during the first nine month period of the previous year. Immigration from France, including returning Israelis, during the last nine months, totals 1,910 (compared to 869 during the same period in 2001). Over 2,000 new immigrants are expected to arrive by the end of the year, compared to 1,007 in 2001. 300 Israelis who were living in France are also expected to return to Israel this year.
